Several new performances have been tracked down from the 80′s of Emily playing the clubs in New York City. They are obvious amateur recordings, but new tunes are always a special surprise to share. Thanks to Simon for his on going vigilance to find new material for AllThingsEmily.

The recordings are comprised of three performances from different venues. First is Emily playing with guitarist John Basile at the Angry Squire Jazz Club on August, 23rd, 1986. Titles include So What, Days of Wine and Roses, Mahna De Carnaval, What’s New, and a couple of Unknowns. The Unknowns sound so familiar but we can’t quite place a name to them yet. If someone recognizes the untitled songs, please let us know.

The second recording took place on August 8th, 1985 at the renowned Blue Note with Paul Socolow on bass and Bob Moses on drums. This short set list includes her favorite Bobby Timmons piece, Moanin, her own composition from the same titled 1983 album, Transitions, and How My Heart Sings made famous by Bill Evans.

The last piece is a single 12 minute plus improv of Emily’s composition, Nunca Mais also from her album Transitions, from an unknown venue in 1984 with guest guitarist Stanley Jordan. You can hear him on the second guitar solo. Enjoy.

Ah, already we have one identity revealed. Toshikazu Saito recognized the second unknown as Speak Low, a composition by Kurt Weill from 1943, popularized by names like Walter Bishop Jr., Cal Tjader, Sonny Clark and others. Thanks Toshikazu.

Emily Remembered Duo Gears Up For U.K. Tour

Jazz guitarists, Deirdre Cartwright and Kathy Dyson are on the road again with an extensive tour of the United Kingdom in November . Eight performances are on the books that celebrate the life and works of Emily Remler. Deirdre and Kathy will cover a number of Emily originals, plus well known jazz standards, bossa nova selections and also some of their own engaging compositions. There’s so much more to the musical legacy Emily Remler left behind than just a jazz guitarist with a heavy Wes Montgomery influence. Emily’s musical tastes were wide and eclectic, as a teenager she studied Indian classical music and found she could memorize and sing whole ragas, she delighted in trying to coax those unorthodox sounds out of her guitar. Emily often credited Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story as a particular inspiration. At the heart of Emily’s writing and playing is a genuine sense of someone communicating their emotions that is often missing in the music of many others.

Here on her birthday we celebrate Emily the composer, with a diverse selection of her own compositions that span her career and ever growing interest in music of all forms.

This collection includes:
Avant-garde – Antonio from Catwalk (very modern sounding, ‘out-there’, unusual melody and solo)
Modal – Pedals from Catwalk (deep, spiritual and yet playful and light in parts, a musical journey)
Latin – Carenia from This Is Me (complex arrangement, thematic development)
Ballad – Waltz For My Grandfather from Take Two (heartfelt, emotive)
Bebop – The Firefly from Firefly (uptempo bop at its hippest, question and answer lines)
